South African 2004 Olympic Games Discus Throw Finalist

A Short Biography

I was introduced to discus throwing at age 14 and did not take it seriously until I won my first South African Junior Championship discus throw title at age 17. Later that same year I represented South Africa in China for the ISF World Gymnasiade and obtained second place. That was the first of my many international appearances for South Africa.

Since then won the IAAF African Junior Championships, IAAF World Junior Championships in 1999 and 2000 respectively. I also set the South African and African Junior Record at the World Junior Championships, with a distance of 59.51m.

I decided to pursue an education in the USA for four years during the period Aug 01 Dec 05. I competed in the National College Athletes Association (NCAA) circuit in the division 1 level, and won the discus for two consecutive years. I also improved my shot put to a personal best of 19.60m and the discus to 67.66m which was then recorded as the best discus throw by any college student ever. This throw helped me qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, in which I obtained 8th place in the final. I was the youngest competitor in the discus throw final.

While in the United States, I also learned how to throw the shot put and now I consider myself a discus / shot put thrower. I hope to represent South Africa in both events at the next Olympic Games in Beijing, China in 2008.

I have finished my education with a Bachelors of Business Administration with a major in Management Information Systems (BBA MIS), as well as a Bachelors of Arts in Economics (BA ECO). I spent the year 2005 focusing completely on my studies to ensure that I graduate.

Im currently living in Rustenburg, South Africa with my parents and Im spending approximately 4 to 6 hours a day training. This consists of throwing the shot put and discus and doing a workout in the gym as well as other miscellaneous exercises. I'm also coaching a couple of high school kids in my free time and I'm having a blast.
